Tips on what age to adopt a puppy

Hey Shorty:

I realize your column is usually just for dogs, but I have a question I hope you can help me with.  I’m planning on adopting a Dachshund puppy and was wondering what age should the puppy be when I bring him or her home?

Dear Wanting a puppy:

I am happy to take questions from humans too, thank you for asking.  The ideal age to adopt a puppy is between eight and twelve weeks old.  The puppy should be completely weaned and used to being away from his mother.

Older puppies that stay with their litter for extended periods can sometimes have difficulty bonding with humans.  Please don’t let that deter you from adopting an older puppy, just be prepared for a little longer adjustment time.  There are also many professional dog trainers that can help to speed you through the rough spots.  Another scenario is a breeder that kept a dog for showing and later determined the dog is not appropriate for showing.  In that case you could have a puppy that is already trained and socialized with humans.
