"Pet Door"

Tips on training dogs to use a dog door and pet door recommendations

Hey Shorty:

My parents put a hole in the wall and covered it with a flap. They keep showing it to me and acting like I should know what to do.  What is it and what do they want me to do?
Signed,
Hole in the wall

Dear Hole in the wall:

I’m so excited for you!  That hole with a flap is your ticket to freely roam in and out of the house when you want or need to.  It’s called a dog door, well actually a pet door those feline creatures use them as well.  Whenever you need to go outside for a bathroom break or to sniff out some lizards you don’t have to wait for someone to let you out.

I have a wonderful dog door too.  It was a little scary at first but Mom just kept showing me how the flap opened then she went outside with my favorite treats and coaxed me through the door.  Forcing you through the opening could make the learning process take longer; I’m relieved that you didn’t mention your parents doing that.  Encouraging you with treats and lots of praise is the best bet.  Timing helps too, if they’ll teach you when you’ve just asked or are scheduled to go outside you might catch on faster.

I absolutely love my dog door, we do only recommend them to dogs with fenced in yards.  Fences not only keep you safely in your own yard, but they keep other critters out.  There are many varieties of pet doors, it sounds like yours is a dog door installed directly in the wall.  Before we moved I had one that was placed in a wooden door .  I actually have two now, one for use with sliding glass doors and the second in the screen on the back porch.  I prefer the kind that has a semi transparent flap, that makes going through it not as scary.

Don’t be afraid!  When you get used to your new dog door, you and your parents will absolutely adore it.
