"When to start puppy training"

Tips on when and what should be included in early puppy training

Hey Shorty:

I am a newly adopted puppy, my new parents keep arguing about when they should start training and socializing me.  What are your thoughts on the subject?
Signed,
Brand new puppy

Dear Brand new puppy:

In the first few weeks that you are in your new home, you and your new parents will be busy just getting to know each other.  If your parents are new to caring for a dog those early days will be filled with figuring out how to care for you.  After you are settled into the household and you begin to trust your new parents then it is time for some basic puppy training.
Early puppy training includes socializing (the puppy being handled and touched), wearing a collar, walking on a leash, learning your name and going to the bathroom in the right place (housetraining).  Many people disagree on this point, but even very young puppies feel more secure when they know what is expected of them.

Make sure your parents know that housetraining can take some time and a lot of patience.  For a few tips on housetraining – read my column on housetraining tips – “Tinkle”.

Rigid or sophisticated training should not be part of early puppy training.  Group training should only happen after you are fully protected from infectious diseases – usually not before four months of age.

I hope this helps to resolve the arguments in your house – Good luck.
