It’s that time of year. I already see the wheels
turning in Mom’s head on what I’ll be for Halloween this year. Each year I
go trick or treating with my human cousins. My Aunt often complains that I
get more attention than the human kids.
When we head out for trick or treating I’m not always
fond of the costume Mom has either purchased or hand made for me, but it
doesn’t take long to get fussed over and I go into my perky I’m too cute for
words prance. After the first few houses I often beat my cousins to the
front door of the next house. We’ve done this for a few years and I have it
down to a science, some of the neighbors even make sure to have doggy treats
for me.
I’m not sure
what is on the agenda this year, Mom has purchased a book called Doggy Fashion
that includes pictures and directions on making costumes (even a Hot Dog
costume).
As you may
have guessed with my
Dachshund pedigree my first Halloween costume was a Hot dog costume.
My Mom’s
friend is an engineer and he provided some specification drawings.
The most difficult problem was how to keep the body of
the costume tight against my body. The first try was an athletic sock (back
in my slim days), but it was so tight they had to cut it off me.
Mom
ended up cutting up an old t-shirt and placing a zipper on the underside and
a snap so it could attach to my collar. She used Velcro on the sides to
hold the buns.
The buns were made from an old pillow case and stuffing.
She used red and yellow yarn attached with thread to represent ketchup and
mustard. It wasn’t too sophisticated but I was still the hit of Halloween
in our neighborhood.
For you fellow dogs if you end up with one of these
costumes beware of the buns, you’ll have trouble getting between the
furniture.
If your parents are considering a costume, check out our
Dachshund Store,
we have a nice variety of
Halloween dog costumes available for prices
much better than buying all the parts and sewing it together like Mom did.
I’m contemplating the skunk costume; Mom does call me Stinker all time.
