Hey! My name is Shorty. I’m a miniature Dachshund.
My “Mom” and I thought it would be fun to put together a web site, so
here’s my first journal entry. I’m 10 years old – Mom has taken to calling me a
“little old lady”. The day she can catch me in one of my many looping races
around the living room will be the day that it fits, until then “little old
lady” will have to apply to someone else living in this household.
I was adopted at 10 weeks old. I weighed 4 pounds. Here’s my
puppy picture - cute huh?
My “Mom” chose me from a large
cardboard box filled with my brothers and sisters. She said I had the
biggest ears and was the only puppy that came to her when she called. For
good measure after she cuddled me the first time I stood up in the box and
cried for her. I think that hooked her.
Mom refers to me as a pet, however I’m a working dog and I take my work very
seriously. I’m in charge of homeland security, snuggles and
eradication of lizards and snakes. I am very dedicated to all my jobs.

You may be curious about Dachshunds. My Mom provides
some background in her article the
Joys of Dachshund ownership. Not sure what she means by “ownership”
though, she sometimes gets confused on who runs things around here
Here’s a couple of interesting tidbits that she didn’t
mention:
Dachshund means “badger dog” in German (dachs=badger,
hund = dog)
Dachshund is pronounced Dak Sund
The original name was Dachs Kreicher which means
badger crawler
We are accomplished hunting dogs despite our
lapdog reputation
Our short legs help us when crawling in tunnels or
burrows
The first Dachshunds imported to the United States
in 1870
Waldi the Dachshund was the official mascot of the
1972 Olympics in Munich Germany
