Snakes, Snakes Everywhere

Last year we had our first snake sighting in our back yard.  We live on a pond in North Florida and it is pretty common to have snakes lurking about looking for tasty frogs.  I chased it across the yard and discovered that if I pushed on the gate of the fence hard enough that it would pop open.  Mom was very upset when she found me face to face with the snake three houses down.  Now Mom keeps a bungee cord on the gate.

Mom managed to get a picture of last years snake, she was concerned that it was poisonous – I’m not sure what that means. She sent the picture off to a snake expert who assured her that while they can sometimes be mean they are not poisonous.

Here’s a picture, he’s a Florida banded water snake which are commonly mistaken for a Water Moccasin. (this isn't Mom's picture we lost that in a computer crash)
My Uncle ran over a Water Moccasin with the lawn mower then  Mom took a photo of it to make sure she could remember the difference between the two.
Here’s that picture. If you're ready to be grossed out click here to see a closer shot - remember he had an encounter with a lawn mower.  If you're not squeamish and take a look, pay attention to the shape of his head.
This year’s snake while not as big as last years (4 foot) was still a significant 3 footer.  I managed to corner him and was barking at the top of my lungs when Mom came outside.  Mom spent a lot of time screaming at me but I had to protect her so I grabbed it and shook it as hard as I could.  Mom tells everyone that the image of a Medusa like Wiener dog thrashing about will be forever burned in her memory.  Mom kept screaming so I decided I would drop the snake.  I guess the snake had had enough of me by then and rose up half his body length and blasted off towards Mom.

I didn’t know Mom could jump that high.

Now she keeps a machete on the back porch.
